Young shoppers are expressing a preference for the unique and personal touch provided by independent stores, according to a recent study cited by Wales Online. The research reveals that a third of shoppers have increased their visits to independent retailers in the past two years, seeking out distinctive products and better customer service.
In particular, the 18 to 27 age group has shown a strong inclination towards independent stores, with 74 per cent favouring them over chain stores. Their favourite items to buy from independent shops include clothing, gifts, and home decor. The willingness to pay extra for products sold by independent retailers further highlights the value they place on the individuality and personalised service offered by these stores.
Charlotte Broadbent, the UK general manager at Faire, which conducted the research, emphasised the significance of independent retailers in meeting the demand for unique shopping experiences. She noted that younger shoppers, in particular, appreciate the personal touch and distinctiveness that independent stores provide, indicating a positive outlook for the growth of the independent retail sector.
While 56 per cent of those surveyed express a desire to support independent stores more, challenges such as the cost-of-living crisis drive some consumers towards larger chain retailers. Nevertheless, a third of respondents stated that they now shop more frequently at independent retailers compared to two years ago. Reasons cited for this shift include a desire to boost the local economy, access unique products, and receive superior customer service.
The research also sheds light on the impact of store closures on high streets, with over 60 per cent of participants noting the closure of shops in their local area over the past year. This has led to 82 per cent of respondents agreeing that high streets require revitalisation. Suggestions for rejuvenating high streets include a wider variety of shops and a greater presence of independent retailers.
Broadbent reiterated the importance of supporting independent businesses, highlighting the unique products and experiences they offer compared to larger retailers. The call for reviving local high streets by embracing independent stores resonates with a large portion of consumers, reflecting a broader shift towards prioritising individuality and personalised service in the retail landscape.
