Young Sherlock TV crew descends on Welsh town as Colin Firth series takes over pub

A TV crew working on the new Prime Video series “Young Sherlock,” directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Colin Firth, recently descended on the Welsh town of Monmouth to film various scenes. The series focuses on an origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective character. The filming took place in several key locations in Monmouth, with extras dressed in Victorian attire filling the town centre. To enhance the period setting, some businesses had their shopfronts temporarily transformed, complete with props like pallets of fruit and vegetables. The crew utilised buildings such as Shire Hall, the Punch House pub, and the Oxford Coffee shop during filming.

One Punch House worker mentioned that extras prepared for scenes and had their make-up done in the pub. Additionally, a horse-drawn carriage was spotted near the Punch House, and a scene appeared to be filmed in the Beaufort Arms Court courtyard. While it remains unknown if lead actors such as Colin Firth and Joseph Fiennes were present in Monmouth during filming, numerous cast members were visible, creating a significant presence in the town. Production for “Young Sherlock” has also been ongoing in Cardiff and other locations in south Wales.

According to Deadline, the series is inspired by the Andy Lane book series and presents an irreverent and action-packed origin story. The narrative follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, portrayed by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, as he embarks on his first case involving a murder mystery at Oxford University. Directed and executive produced by Guy Ritchie, the show boasts a star-studded cast, including Max Irons, Dónal Finn, Natascha McElhone, and Zine Tseng. The series is set to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that significantly impacts Sherlock’s life.

Notably, this is not the first Sherlock adaptation filmed in Wales, with previous versions, such as the BBC One series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, having been predominantly shot in Cardiff. With a mix of talented actors and an experienced director at the helm, “Young Sherlock” promises to offer a fresh and dynamic take on the beloved detective character for audiences to enjoy.
