Young adults prioritising fitness goals over proper sleep are risking their overall wellbeing, a study has revealed. According to a report by Wales Online, one in five young Brits confessed that they value having a toned stomach more than ensuring they get a decent night’s rest. This worrying trend was highlighted in a survey involving 1,500 regular exercisers, showing a significant number of Generation Z and Millennials placing their fitness routines above adequate sleep. While Millennials were found to be particularly enthusiastic about regular exercise to support their mental, physical, and emotional health, only 31 per cent of participants had adjusted their sleep patterns to align with their fitness goals.

The survey indicated that mornings are the preferred time for workouts among many adults, with 29 per cent opting for exercise sessions between 5 am and 10 am, while 23 per cent prefer evening sessions from 5 pm to 9 pm. Notably, nearly half of the adults who participated in the study acknowledged the positive impact of a good night’s sleep on their overall wellbeing. However, the study also found that 30 per cent of Millennials struggle to maintain consistent sleeping and waking times daily, and 41 per cent find it challenging to reduce screen time before bed.

In response to these findings, Silentnight partnered with Myvitamins to develop a sleep training plan aimed at assisting fitness enthusiasts in managing their routines to establish sustainable habits for improved energy, recovery, and overall wellbeing. Dr. Holly Milling, Silentnight’s in-house sleep specialist, emphasised the importance of quality sleep in enhancing performance, motivation, and focus. Dr. Milling debunked the notion that individuals must choose between a toned body and adequate rest, stating that good-quality sleep actually enhances performance and aids in achieving fitness goals effectively.

Moreover, a representative from Myvitamins underscored the critical role of sleep in daily functions, noting that without sufficient rest, one’s focus, mood, energy levels, and athletic performance can be severely affected. They highlighted the benefits of magnesium supplements in promoting better sleep quality and relaxation, ultimately contributing to a more restful sleep experience. The study also revealed that Millennials are more inclined to take vitamins and supplements, with 44 per cent of Gen Z individuals following suit.
