Wrexham AFC Reveals Spectacular New Kop Stand Design with Tribute to Mining Disaster Victims
Wrexham AFC, under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has unveiled revised plans for the new Kop stand at the Racecourse Ground. The club recently submitted a fresh planning application to Wrexham Council for the 5,500-capacity development, designed by renowned architects Populous, known for their work on iconic stadiums like the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley.
The new Kop stand is set to become a focal point at the main gateway into Wrexham’s city centre. The design includes features such as safe standing areas, hospitality suites, and accessible seating. One of the standout elements of the design is the incorporation of two large dragons on the exterior, a nod to the club’s crest and Welsh heritage.
The roof design of the Kop stand is specifically aimed at enhancing the atmosphere during matchdays by directing supporter noise towards the pitch. Additionally, there are plans for potential future expansion with an extra 2,000 seats, subject to further planning approval. The stand will also house player facilities, including the tunnel, currently located in the Wrexham Lager Stand.
Noteworthy elements of the design pay homage to Wrexham’s history, with a red brick facade reminiscent of the city’s former nickname, “Terracottapolis”. A poignant tribute to the 266 victims of the Gresford Colliery disaster in 1934 will be featured in the form of a miners wheel in the public plaza behind the stand.
Michael Williamson, Wrexham AFC’s chief executive, expressed the significance of the new Kop stand in the club’s history, highlighting its role in enhancing fan experiences and contributing to the city’s rejuvenation. The stand’s design aims to complement Wrexham’s architectural heritage while meeting UEFA Category 4 stadium requirements.
The Welsh Government has provided over £17 million in public funding towards the project, which is expected to commence construction post the current season. The redevelopment plans extend beyond the Kop stand, with an overall stadium capacity increase projected to reach 28,000 to 32,000 seats. This move aligns with the club’s vision of hosting international events and boosting the local community.
Populous’s global director, Declan Sharkey, emphasised the unique and authentic approach taken in designing the new Kop stand. The architects have incorporated elements to maximise the fan experience, focusing on both aesthetics and functionality. The project signifies a significant milestone for Wrexham AFC and the city’s sporting landscape.
The club remains optimistic about the completion timeline, targeting a summer 2026 inauguration for the new stand. Despite previous project delays, stakeholders are committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that reflects Wrexham’s rich history and sets a benchmark for stadium architecture. The Kop stand stands as a symbol of progress and a testament to the community’s resilience and passion for football.
