Reigning World’s Strongest Man, Tom Stoltman, faced a fiery challenge like no other when he took on the world’s hottest chilli during a red hot eating challenge. Standing at an impressive 6ft 8ins, the strongman, known for his exceptional feats of strength, ventured into unfamiliar territory as he and his brother Luke, Europe’s Strongest Man, tackled the Carolina Reaper chilli in a sweat-inducing bid at Flaming Grill in Manchester.
The daring duo took on the pub chain’s latest creation, the Spicy Clucker dish, described as the spiciest platter ever served. This fiery feast included pulled tikka chicken thigh, Spicy Reapers Revenge Chipolata sausages, chicken skewers, fries, onion bhajis, rice, and salad, all smothered in a searing Carolina Reaper sauce and accompanied by an optional glass of milk. Weighing over 50 stone combined, Tom and Luke struggled to bear the intense heat, as visible sweat streamed down their faces, ultimately succumbing to the overpowering spiciness.
Tom, 30, admitted, “I’ve faced some tough challenges in my time as a strongman, but there’s never been anything quite like that, wow! That’s without a doubt the spiciest thing I’ve ever eaten.” Meanwhile, Luke, 39, remarked, “I’ve battled through all sorts throughout my career, but that was something else entirely.” Despite the intense heat, they appreciated the flavours but found the spice levels too much to handle.
Encouraging other spice enthusiasts to take on the challenge, Luke shared, “For those who love the spicier things, this is a terrific challenge, delicious food at a reasonable price, I’d encourage people to try it!” Alongside the Spicy Clucker dish, Flaming Grill also introduced the new ‘Who let the dogs out’ dish, featuring four German sausages, a giant pretzel, pork schnitzel, and fries. These dishes are available in all pubs for a limited time.
In celebration of the nation’s penchant for spice, the introduction of the Spicy Clucker dish aligns with research indicating that a significant proportion of Britons, especially the younger generation, enjoy spicy food. With hot sauce finding its way into unconventional dishes like pasta, roast dinners, and even cereal, the British appetite for spicy fare is undeniable. Major cities like London, Birmingham, and Edinburgh lead the pack in embracing spicy cuisine, while the people of York prefer milder flavours.
Sophie Howells from Flaming Grill expressed excitement about launching the new spicy challenge, acknowledging the UK’s spicy food enthusiasts and the allure of the Carolina Reaper chilli. The Spicy Clucker challenge, alongside the ‘Who let the dogs out’ dish, promises a thrilling culinary experience for those eager to test their spice tolerance. Whether you love a fiery kick or prefer a milder palate, these dishes offer a unique dining adventure that caters to a wide range of tastes.
