A woman with a £600-a-week crack cocaine habit was sentenced to 12 months in prison for ABH, theft, and fraud after stealing her grandfather’s bank card. Kelly Thomas, a mother, forced her way into her elderly grandfather’s house and took his bank card, exploiting his love for her to fuel her drug addiction. The judge at Swansea Crown Court condemned Thomas’ actions as “disgraceful” and warned her of the consequences of continuing down the same path.
The court heard that Thomas had a history of pressuring her 75-year-old grandfather and mother for money to purchase drugs. Despite his reluctance, the grandfather often gave in, feeling sorry for her and wanting to help. On one occasion, Thomas pushed her way into her grandfather’s house, causing him physical harm, and stole his bank card. She used the card to withdraw £200 from an ATM, which was captured on CCTV footage leading to her arrest.
Kelly Louise Thomas pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, theft, and fraud. Her defence lawyer explained that her actions were driven by her drug addiction, which started with heroin before escalating to crack cocaine. Thomas acknowledged the need for a change in her life to break free from the cycle of substance abuse.
Judge Paul Thomas KC highlighted the gravity of Thomas’ betrayal towards her grandfather, who had raised her through difficult times. He presented her with a choice – to reform her ways or face a bleak future. Thomas received a 12-month prison sentence with the possibility of early release on licence after serving half the term.
This case sheds light on the destructive impact of drug addiction and the lengths individuals may go to feed their habits. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and breaking free from the cycle of substance abuse before it leads to irreversible consequences.
