A shocking case of a woman discovering videos of herself being sexually abused while she was sleeping has come to light. The incident involved Charlie Thacker, 29, from Newport, who committed heinous acts upon the victim without her consent. The victim, upon stumbling upon the pictures and videos of the abuse, was left deeply affected, raising questions about why such a violation occurred. Thacker had filmed himself sexually abusing the woman while she was in a deep sleep, keeping the videos hidden from her knowledge.
The ordeal came to light during a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, where it was revealed that the victim had not consented to the sexual acts captured in the footage, whether she was awake or asleep. Despite Thacker’s claims that the victim had consented to the acts, the police investigation and examination of electronic devices revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse. The videos depicted Thacker penetrating the victim with his fingers and engaging in other forms of sexual assault without her knowledge or approval.
In a victim personal statement read in court, the woman expressed the significant toll the incident had taken on her mental health. She shared feelings of horror, disgust, and anxiety, revealing her struggles with sleep disturbances and constant fear following the discovery of the videos. Thacker later pleaded guilty to multiple offences of assault by penetration and sexual assault, acknowledging the gravity of his actions and expressing remorse for his behaviour through his barrister, Nigel Fryer.
In response to the severity of the crimes, Judge Carl Harrison sentenced Thacker to nine years in prison, with a requirement to serve two-thirds of the term in custody before being released on licence. Additionally, Thacker will be subject to a restraining order and Sexual Harm Prevention Order following a later hearing. The judge’s decision reflects the serious nature of the offences committed by Thacker, highlighting the importance of accountability and protection for the victim.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the impact of sexual abuse and the vital need to address such crimes within the justice system. It underscores the importance of consent, respect, and dignity in all forms of human interaction, particularly in intimate relationships. The victim’s courage in coming forward and seeking justice demonstrates the resilience and strength required to confront and overcome trauma.
Incidents of sexual abuse and violation can have long-lasting effects on victims, affecting their mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. It is essential for society to support and empower survivors of such crimes, ensuring they receive the necessary care, protection, and justice. The sentencing of Charlie Thacker sends a clear message that such reprehensible actions will not be tolerated and will be met with significant consequences under the law.
