A tragic incident involving a mother-of-two who collapsed and passed away after being bitten by her family’s pet hamster has shocked the community. The 38-year-old woman, originally from Colombia, was seeking medical attention at a health centre near her home in Spain with her two children, aged 17 and 11, following the reported bite. The woman collapsed just a few feet away from the hospital entrance, as she was on her way to the A&E department. Health workers tried to resuscitate her, but sadly, their efforts were in vain.
The woman collapsed outside the health centre in the city of Villarreal, located north of Valencia on Spain’s east coast, around 10.30 pm on a Friday night. An autopsy will be conducted to determine if the hamster bite played a role in her sudden death, although autopsy results are typically not disclosed to the public in Spain. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her passing.
While hamster bites are generally considered harmless, there have been rare cases where diseases like rabies or bacterial infections have been transmitted through such incidents. Owners who sustain hamster bites are advised to thoroughly clean the wound to prevent any potential complications. In some cases, individuals with allergies have experienced severe reactions, requiring urgent medical attention, as seen in a previous incident involving a man rushed to a hospital near Evesham in 2007 due to an anaphylactic shock from a hamster bite.
The public is reminded to exercise caution and seek prompt medical treatment if they experience any unusual symptoms following a hamster bite. The community mourns the untimely loss of this woman, and our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.
