Mark ‘Jock’ Jones, a father-of-two, initially thought he had a simple ear infection in 2018, but it turned out to be something much more serious. His wife, Bridie, a nurse, suspected there was an underlying issue when Mark started experiencing multiple infections simultaneously. Despite a rushed hospital visit for suspected appendicitis, Mark was sent home until further testing revealed the devastating truth – he had multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that is treatable but not curable.
The long and challenging road to treatment began with 12 months of chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant. Mark described the chemotherapy as gruelling, almost bringing him to the brink of death before the stem cell transplant could reboot his system. Despite the difficulties, Mark’s determination and positive outlook shone through as he engaged in charity activities like cycling even while in the hospital, aiming to get back on his feet quicker than expected.
After a brief period in remission, the cancer returned, prompting Mark to undergo a second stem cell transplant earlier this year. His physical resilience, coupled with a strong mindset, allowed him to recover faster than anticipated once again. Throughout his journey, Mark’s passion for fitness, surfing, and helping others has remained a driving force in his life.
Despite facing a terminal diagnosis, Mark’s perspective on life has shifted towards appreciating the precious moments with his family and finding joy in everyday experiences. His children, Reubyn and Isla, have been a source of strength for him, and he cherishes the time spent with them immensely.
In a heartwarming display of resilience and positivity, Mark has raised funds for Myeloma UK, completed virtual challenges, and even ran the London Marathon while undergoing chemotherapy. A documentary titled “Riptide,” documenting his journey, is set to premiere this month, showcasing the inspiring story of a man determined to make the most of life despite the challenges he faces.
As new treatments continue to emerge for myeloma, Mark remains hopeful and focused on living his life to the fullest. His unwavering spirit and commitment to spreading awareness and positivity serve as an inspiration to all those facing their own struggles.
