Wetherspoon pub sale update with 27 gone and full list of those to go

JD Wetherspoon has made strides in its pub sale activity, with a total of 27 pubs either sold, their leases terminated, or up for sale. The pub group reported a significant rebound in profits over the past year, attributing the success to strong customer demand that propelled revenues upwards. Pre-tax profits soared by 73.5% to £73.9 million for the year ending July 28, accompanied by a 5.7% increase in revenues to £2.04 billion, driven by a 7.6% rise in like-for-like sales.

The growth in sales at Wetherspoon’s establishments was slightly tempered by a reduction in the number of pub sites, as the company sold 18 pubs, ended the leases on nine others, and opened two new sites. Tim Martin, the chairman of JD Wetherspoon, noted the positive trend in sales, with a 4.9% rise in like-for-like sales in the most recent nine-week period leading up to September 29, 2024. The company is cautiously optimistic about its financial performance for the current fiscal year, contingent on sustained sales growth.

Currently, three pubs are listed for sale – the Pontlottyn in Abertillery, the Ivor Davies in Cardiff, and the Market Cross in Holywell. Additionally, 14 pubs are under offer throughout various locations including Battersea, Bexleyheath, Bristol, London, and more. Charlie Huggins, manager of the ‘Quality Shares Portfolio’ at Wealth Club, praised Wetherspoon’s strong performance amidst a challenging economic climate, emphasising the company’s focus on competitive pricing and quality service to retain customer loyalty.

As Wetherspoon navigates the evolving economic landscape, its commitment to value and operational excellence positions the company favourably to withstand cost pressures in the sector. With improving consumer sentiment due to declining interest rates and inflation, Wetherspoon stands poised to continue expanding its market share and building on its recent sales momentum.
