Welsh school placed in partial lockdown after ‘threats made’ online

A secondary school in Wales had to take precautionary measures and implement a partial lockdown after receiving threats directed at two students. Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland, Carmarthenshire, responded to a threatening message sent via social media on Wednesday by locking all external doors and ensuring pupils stayed inside classrooms at all times. Staff members were stationed to monitor school corridors and the perimeter of the premises near Whitland town centre. The situation understandably caused worry among parents, prompting the school to directly inform the parents of the two targeted pupils.

Despite the unsettling incident, the school remained open as usual on Thursday and Friday, with the presence of officers from the neighbourhood policing team on Wednesday. Dyfed-Powys Police has initiated an investigation into the matter. In a letter addressed to parents the following day, Head Teacher Alun Owen reiterated that the school had returned to normal operations and that the perceived risk had passed. Though specifics about the threats were not disclosed, Owen explained that the threats warranted the lockdown response and were managed effectively by the school.

He expressed gratitude for the professional conduct displayed by the school staff throughout the incident and reassured parents that the school’s safety protocols had proven effective. Students requiring additional support could access welfare services through designated staff members. The response by Ysgol Dyffryn Taf showcased the establishment’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and handling security concerns promptly and efficiently.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of school safety and the need for swift action in response to potential threats. The collaboration between school staff, law enforcement, and parents highlights the collective effort to prioritise the well-being of students and maintain a secure educational setting. As the investigation progresses, the school and authorities continue to work towards ensuring the safety and peace of mind of the school community.
