A Welsh police force has been under scrutiny as new statistics reveal that Dyfed-Powys Police has paid out substantial sums in compensation over the past five years, with the number of claims rising. The force, responsible for policing Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Powys, has paid a total of £324,000 in damages since 2019 as a result of almost 200 claims made against it by members of the public.
According to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information Request, a breakdown of the claims against Dyfed-Powys Police shows a fluctuating pattern over the years. In 2019/2020, 36 claims were lodged, with nine settled, and a year later, 22 claims were made with nine being settled. The numbers peaked in 2021/2022 with 38 claims and 11 settlements, but subsequently dropped to 36 claims and eight settlements the following year. However, in the most recent period of 2023/2024, there was a sharp increase with 54 claims made, seven of which were settled.
The reasons behind the claims against the police force vary, with common factors being unlawful arrest or detention, financial losses, personal injury, and breaches in the duty of care. JF Law solicitor Lucy Parker emphasized the importance of accountability in institutions like the police force and highlighted that reasons for claims could include wrongful arrest, assault, malicious prosecution, or negligence. Parker stressed the uniqueness of each case and the significance of seeking legal advice promptly if individuals feel wronged by the police.
The issue of compensation payouts by police forces is not limited to Dyfed-Powys Police, as reports from across the UK indicate that forces have collectively paid out over £300,000 due to incidents such as incorrect property raids, among others. The most common claim reason nationwide is property damage, followed by vehicle damage from collisions. Claims against police forces can come from both public members and internal staff, with the need for transparency and accountability being paramount in ensuring justice for all involved.
As the figures concerning Dyfed-Powys Police come to light, the force has been approached for a response to address the trends in claims and compensation payouts.
