Neath Port Talbot Council has recently made strides to address the issue of empty and problematic commercial properties scattered across the borough. The council has approved plans to bolster its environmental health service to clamp down on properties that are causing concerns due to being empty, derelict or breeding anti-social behaviour. The initiative, backed by cabinet members in a meeting held on March 19, aims to combat issues such as fire-setting, substance misuse, and anti-social behaviour at these sites.
The decision includes the potential creation of two new positions for either health or enforcement officers. These new roles are crucial for preventing undesirable activities at vacant properties that are currently not being effectively policed due to a lack of resources within the existing environmental health team. By increasing the staffing levels, the council can now utilise its discretionary powers, including enforcement activities, to target a variety of properties blighting the borough.
Among the properties that could benefit from this new focus are the former Yr Hen Bont Care Home in Ystalyfera, which has experienced multiple break-ins and significant fires in recent years, and the deteriorating former Co-op building on Margam Road in Port Talbot. These locations have been flagged as hotspots for issues like youths loitering, fires, and anti-social behaviour. The council’s report highlighted the importance of taking proactive enforcement actions to prevent these problems from escalating.
Councillor Cen Phillips of Coedffranc West emphasised during the meeting that empty commercial properties have the potential to negatively impact communities and town centres by attracting anti-social behaviour. He stressed the significance of progressing with the approved plans to tackle these issues head-on. Another councillor, Alun Llewelyn, echoed this sentiment by viewing the council’s proactive approach as a positive step towards revitalising and safeguarding the local neighbourhoods.
