Swansea Council has given the green light for an ambitious new leisure project on Kilvey Hill, which promises to offer thrilling attractions such as a zip-line, sky swing, and more, all with panoramic views of the city and Swansea Bay. The decision follows a lengthy and at times tense debate within a council planning meeting.

The Skyline Enterprises project, proposed by a New Zealand-based company, aims to make Kilvey Hill more accessible to a wider audience, boost tourism, and create job opportunities in the area. The development includes plans for a gondola lift, a food hall, outdoor terrace, sky swing, zipline, luge tracks, mountain bike routes, walking trails, play areas, and more.

During the council meeting, nine objectors raised concerns about the potential impact of the development on Kilvey Hill’s quiet area designation, visual aesthetics, water supplies, traffic levels, and overall sustainability. Some questioned the feasibility of the project in an already competitive outdoor leisure market, while others expressed doubts about its long-term success and benefits for the community.

Despite the objections, supporters of the project, including planning agents, local councillors, and council leader Rob Stewart, advocated for the economic and tourism benefits that the Skyline development could bring to Swansea. They highlighted the potential for job creation, improved access to the hill, and enhanced visitor experiences that could boost the city’s profile as a leisure destination.

The proposal received mixed reactions from the public, with around 560 letters of objection and 40 letters of support submitted during the consultation process.

Skyline Enterprises has committed to monitoring water quality, mitigating visual impacts, and implementing measures to enhance biodiversity as part of the project. With plans to attract over 450,000 visitors annually and create employment opportunities in hospitality and tourism, the Skyline Swansea project is poised to transform Kilvey Hill into a world-class leisure destination. As construction commences, stakeholders will be closely involved in ensuring the project’s success and its contribution to Swansea’s tourism and economic development goals.
