Welsh binmen ‘caught on camera throwing recyclable batteries into hedges’

Welsh binmen have been accused of discarding recyclable batteries into hedges, as claimed by a councillor who stated there is video evidence to support the allegation. The incident came to light during discussions regarding Denbighshire Council’s recycling scheme rollout, where concerns were raised about the council’s handling of the situation. The Independent Party proposed a motion to remove council leader Councillor Jason McLellan and his cabinet members, but the motion was defeated with a 25-17 vote against it.

During a meeting in Ruthin, Independent leader Cllr Huw Hilditch-Roberts highlighted the issue of the council being put in special measures. Llangollen independent councillor, Karen Edwards, brought attention to the video evidence she had received showing workers disposing of batteries in a resident’s hedge. She also mentioned instances of operatives combining segregated waste and raised concerns about training and health and safety protocols not being followed.

Following the meeting, a council spokeswoman confirmed that an investigation was underway in response to the circulating video. Cllr Jason McLellan, council leader, acknowledged the issue and expressed remorse, promising a thorough review and improvement of the situation. Despite the turmoil, the Labour council leader and his Labour/Plaid cabinet managed to retain their positions with support from Plaid Cymru and the Green Party members at the council meeting.

Throughout the meeting, other councillors expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the recycling scheme and the management of waste collection. The community voiced concerns about missed collections, co-mingled recycling, and the overall chaos surrounding the situation. Cllr Bobby Feeley supported the idea of removing the cabinet due to the unprecedented circumstances, while Cllr Justine Evans highlighted the significant public dissatisfaction in Rhyl.

As the investigation continues, residents and councillors await further updates on the measures being taken to address the issues raised. The council has assured that steps are being taken to rectify the situation and prevent such incidents from reoccurring. The focus is on improving waste collection processes, ensuring the proper handling of recyclable materials, and restoring confidence in the council’s recycling efforts.
