Weight expert says common mistake adds up to 94 calories to each meal

A weight-loss expert has identified a common mistake that could be adding up to 94 extra calories to each meal without people realising it. Professor Franklin Joseph from Dr Frank’s weight loss clinic highlighted that popular condiments such as ketchup, salad cream, and mayonnaise could be sabotaging weight-loss plans for many individuals. He emphasised the importance of following a calorie-controlled diet as a key component of successful weight loss. Prof Joseph explained that while condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise are widely used to enhance the taste of dishes, they can also be high in sugars, fats, and calories, contributing to daily calorie intake.

For instance, mayonnaise contains 94 calories per tablespoon, while salad cream has 50 calories. Adding just a tablespoon of ketchup can increase calorie intake by 19, Caesar salad dressing by 85, and ranch dressing by 73. The expert advised vigilance in monitoring caloric intake to achieve weight loss goals effectively. Making small, achievable changes to dietary habits, such as incorporating more protein, swapping sugary drinks for water, and opting for whole grains, can support sustainable weight loss efforts.

Prof Joseph stressed the significance of maintaining a calorie deficit each day to facilitate weight loss. He recommended being mindful of the caloric content of condiments and making gradual adjustments to dietary choices for long-term success.
