Dog walkers on Anglesey have been put on high alert following reports of an “unknown substance” at popular north Wales beauty spot. The warning came after Environment officers and police were alerted to the situation at Newborough Forest. Owners venturing in the area are being advised to remain vigilant and keep their pets on leads for now, with images surfacing of pink capsules littered in the woodland. A statement from Natural Resources Wales stated: “We’ve received reports of an unknown substance at Newborough forest. Our officers are investigating and we have informed the police as a precaution.”
Separately, overwhelming visitor numbers and transport issues have ruffled feathers among locals, especially with the bank holiday weekend promising even greater influxes. Discussions continue as both residents and visitors express their anxieties about tourism’s impact, infrastructure adequacies, and local management strategies, reports North Wales Live. Natural Resources Wales urges visitors to the popular seaside destination to prepare for potential disruptions, especially during peak hours.
A spokesperson stated: “Those visiting are being asked to plan ahead, be aware of traffic congestion, to respect the local community and environment and to prepare for the car park to be full at busy times weekends and between 11am and 3pm during periods of good weather.”
In cooperation with Anglesey Council, NRW is rolling out a trial scheme in Newborough to address the surge of traffic along the A4080 following deliberations with community representatives. They continued: “The ambition is to enable traffic to flow more freely through the village, as well as restricting access to the site’s narrow access road and giving notice of alternative beaches when the car park is full. It is hoped the trial will help inform longer-term plans to manage traffic and access issues in and around Newborough in the future.”
The influx of vehicles leads to congestion through the village, the car park reaching capacity soon after opening and, with visitors looking to stay for the whole day, the likelihood of other visitors gaining access to the site is significantly reduced.
