**Wales International Steff Evans Bids Farewell to Scarlets After 11-Year Tenure**
Steff Evans, a prominent figure in Welsh rugby, has announced his forthcoming departure from the Scarlets after more than a decade with the club. The 30-year-old winger is set to conclude his time at Parc y Scarlets at the close of the season, marking the end of an illustrious period stretching back to 2014.
Evans’ announcement was made official as the Scarlets released a heartfelt statement on their website. The local talent, hailing from Llanelli and known for his attacking flair, revealed that he had made the decision following a lengthy recovery from a serious Achilles injury that saw him sidelined for much of this season. His determination and resilience were evident when he made his long-awaited comeback in January, featuring in a victory over Edinburgh. However, as the season draws to a close, Evans has determined that now is the time to move on.
Since making his debut for the Scarlets against Zebre in November 2014, Evans has become a mainstay of the team’s backline. Over 11 seasons, he amassed a remarkable 190 appearances and notched 74 tries, earning him a place in the record books as the joint-highest Welsh try-scorer in United Rugby Championship (URC) history. His prowess on the wing played a pivotal role in what is often seen as the Scarlets’ modern golden era, notably during the 2016-17 campaign.
That particular season saw Evans deliver standout performances which were instrumental in the Scarlets clinching the Pro12 title. His excellent form did not go unnoticed, and he was duly rewarded with a call-up to the Welsh national team, making his debut on the 2017 summer tour against Tonga. In total, Evans went on to represent Wales 13 times over his career, providing attacking impetus and creativity on the international stage.
Reflecting on his journey, Evans shared a personal message with supporters and team-mates alike: “There have been some incredible memories – obviously, winning that final in Dublin stands out. The rugby we played that season was on another level. Reaching semi-finals in Europe was also a significant highlight for me. But above all, it’s the friendships and camaraderie I’ve experienced that will stay with me. I’ve been fortunate to play alongside and against some of the game’s greats.”
Evans continued, reminiscing about formative moments early in his career, such as taking the field against rugby legend Mils Muliaina, and praising key figures such as Johnny McNicholl and Jonathan Davies who helped shape his development. He was quick to acknowledge that the Scarlets’ success owed much to a strong collective: “That team that won the league – so many unbelievable players for Scarlets and Wales, like Foxy, Scott, Gar, and Tadhg Beirne. There are countless memories, but that emphatic win over the Ospreys before the Leinster semi-final in 2017—at home, with a huge crowd—that was a special day.”
Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel paid tribute to Evans’ distinguished contribution to the club, highlighting his local roots and progression through the academy as a source of inspiration. “Steff has been a big part of this club for a long time, a local boy who came through the age-grade pathway to become a great Scarlet. His achievements are evident – he’s one of the league’s leading try-scorers and has provided unforgettable moments for supporters.”
Peel added, “Steff has been not just a superb player, but also a great club man, setting standards and acting as a role model for younger players. Few can claim to have played close to 200 games for the Scarlets in the professional era. I’m sure the fans will show their gratitude after Saturday’s game.”
As Evans prepares to take the next step in his career—whether that be to another club or a new chapter beyond the rugby field—the Scarlets, their supporters, and the broader Welsh rugby community are united in their appreciation for his service and achievements. His legacy, marked by thrilling tries, unforgettable victories, and unwavering loyalty, will undoubtedly endure in Llanelli and beyond.
The Scarlets faithful will therefore have a final opportunity to celebrate Evans’ contributions at the weekend, as the side take to the field one last time this season with their local hero among their ranks. Whatever the future may hold for Steff Evans, his name is certain to remain synonymous with the modern history of Welsh rugby.
