A vulnerable man was viciously attacked and robbed in the middle of a busy supermarket, leading to him suffering an epileptic fit, a court in Swansea heard. Brothers James and Nicholas Holt targeted the man, knowing he had cash on him after pawning his phone. The incident left the victim in a severe state of distress, resulting in a medical emergency. The judge at Swansea Crown Court condemned the actions of the robbers as “disgraceful” and “cowardly”, noting their extensive history of criminal activity.
According to the prosecution, on March 1 of this year, the victim visited a store in Swansea to pawn his phone and was followed by the Holt brothers. The victim was given £350 for his phone and stored £250 of that money in his shoe before heading home, where he was trailed by the siblings. Once at the victim’s residence, the brothers’ behaviour raised concerns, leading to them all taking a taxi to a retail park. The incident escalated at a Lidl supermarket, where the brothers physically assaulted the vulnerable man and stole cash and belongings from him.
During the attack, Nicholas Holt threatened the victim and warned him against involving the authorities. The robbery was halted by Lidl staff intervening, but the victim later suffered an epileptic fit due to the stress of the ordeal. Following their identification and arrest, James Holt, 44, and Nicholas Holt, 37, pleaded guilty to robbery and were sentenced to 27 months in prison with a 25% reduction for their guilty pleas. The brothers are expected to serve half of their sentences in custody before being released on license.
In court, it was revealed that James Holt had a lengthy criminal record, including multiple offences related to dishonesty and violence. His defence lawyer acknowledged the impact of personal tragedy on his actions, citing a spiral of substance abuse following the death of his mother. Nicholas Holt, with a history of robbery and violence since his youth, expressed regret for his involvement in the robbery, attributing it to financial need and low-level criminal activity. Both defendants expressed remorse for their actions.
Judge Huw Rees harshly criticized the brothers for preying on a vulnerable individual, describing the incident as a despicable act of bullying by older men against a younger victim. He emphasised the cowardice of their behaviour and labelled their criminal records as shameful.
