Jordan Crewe, 27, has been sentenced to two years in prison after a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court revealed the extent of his abusive behaviour towards his partner, leaving her feeling like “a shell of the person” she used to be.

During their relationship, Crewe subjected his partner to controlling and coercive behaviour, where he dictated what she could wear, prevented her from seeing her family unless he was present, and even hid her make-up. This manipulative behaviour led the victim to attempt to take her own life.

The court heard that Crewe breached bail conditions to continue abusing and assaulting his partner. One particular incident involved him barging into her house, damaging her property, and later harassing her with letters and greeting cards, begging her to drop the charges against him.

Crewe’s abusive behaviour escalated to physical violence, including biting his partner’s face and strangling her while she was driving. He also resorted to emotional blackmail, threatening suicide and sending distressing videos to coerce and control his victim.

In her victim impact statement, the partner described how Crewe’s abuse transformed her from a happy and bubbly person into someone who felt isolated, insecure, and on the brink of despair. She recounted how she hid bruises with make-up, cut off contact with friends and family, and ultimately contemplated taking her own life due to the emotional and mental toll of the abuse.

Despite Crewe’s troubled background and mental health issues, the court deemed his actions as intentional and harmful, resulting in convictions for intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, controlling/coercive behaviour, and harassment. His previous criminal record includes offenses related to malicious communications, harassment, and drug possession.

In sentencing Crewe to two years in prison, Recorder Robin Rouch highlighted the severity of the abuse and its lasting impact on the victim. Crewe will serve half of the sentence in custody and the remainder on licence, with conditions to prevent further contact with the victim.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic abuse and the importance of recognising and addressing coercive and controlling behaviours in relationships. It also underscores the need for adequate support and protection for survivors of abuse to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse or coercive control, it’s essential to seek help and support from organisations such as domestic violence helplines and local support services.
