The first assault occurred on May 11 last year when McGonagle, after a night of drinking with friends, came home in the early morning hours. He disclosed to his partner that he had taken cocaine before heading to the shower. In the wee hours of the morning, the victim was startled by McGonagle, who was shouting aggressively with foam around his mouth and darkened eyes. He accused her of infidelity, leading to a frightening outburst where he punched the air violently and verbally abused her. Subsequently, he struck her on the head, causing her to black out.

Following the attack, McGonagle proceeded to make chilling threats, promising to decapitate his partner and pull her outside. Paralyzed with fear, she remained in bed until the morning, discovering bruises and impaired vision. Three days later, when she reported the assault to the police, McGonagle was apprehended but subsequently released on bail with restrictions not to contact the victim.

However, on July 8, defiance of the bail conditions, McGonagle visited the victim’s residence bearing gifts. Despite a seemingly peaceful evening, an argument erupted, leading to a physical altercation where he shoved her into the sink, causing back pain. The aggression intensified as he strangled her, causing breathing difficulties, and ultimately fracturing her arm in a scuffle that left her incapacitated on the floor.

Upon seeking medical attention, the victim was diagnosed with a fractured humerus and knee tear, requiring urgent medical intervention. McGonagle, residing in Coveny Street, Adamsdown, Cardiff, was subsequently arrested and pleaded guilty to charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

During her emotional victim impact statement to the court, the victim expressed profound trauma, recounting the debilitating effects of the assault on her daily life. She lamented the loss of independence due to her injuries, affecting simple tasks like climbing stairs and personal hygiene. This sentiment was compounded by the betrayal of trust from someone she believed loved her, leaving her haunted by the memories of that harrowing night.

In his defence, Jeffrey Jones shed light on McGonagle’s vocational qualifications and reputable work ethic, balancing it against the grave crimes committed. Despite his attributes, Judge Shomon Khan sentenced him to a three-year prison term with an extended two-year license period, coupled with an indefinite restraining order.

The victim’s harrowing ordeal serves as a chilling reminder of the pervasive nature of domestic abuse, underscoring the critical need for support services. The impact of such violent acts extends far beyond physical injuries, often shattering lives and leaving lasting scars on survivors. This case underscores the importance of holding perpetrators of domestic violence accountable and providing comprehensive support to victims on their path to healing and justice.
