UK gave Israel military aid amid Iran missile strikes

The UK’s Ministry of Defence has revealed that British armed forces supported Israel during Iranian missile strikes on Tuesday, October 1. Defence Secretary John Healy did not provide further details on the British aid, as reported by the Mirror. The Defence Secretary acknowledged that UK military personnel played a role in safeguarding Israel following Iran’s ballistic missile attacks, which were a response to incidents in Gaza, Lebanon, and the assassination of Hezbollah’s leader.

John Healey expressed gratitude towards the British service members for their bravery and professionalism, highlighting that the UK’s involvement aimed to prevent further conflicts in the Middle East. Condemning Iran’s actions, he emphasised the UK’s commitment to deterring further escalation in the region. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East and urged British citizens in Lebanon to evacuate amid the growing violence.

On October 2, British nationals fleeing Lebanon were scheduled to board a UK Government-chartered flight to safety. Prime Minister Starmer reiterated the UK’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence and called for an end to Iran’s attacks. The missile strikes were reportedly in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

Amid the rising tensions, discussions took place involving European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, where the need for de-escalation and restraint from all parties was emphasised. Foreign Secretary David Lammy warned against a cycle of escalation, underscoring that it would not be in anyone’s interest.

The Prime Minister chaired a ministerial meeting to address the evolving crisis in the Middle East and reaffirmed the UK’s stance in supporting Israel’s security. As the situation remains volatile, efforts are underway to ensure the safety of British citizens in the region. The ongoing conflict underscores the complexities and challenges faced in the Middle East, with international leaders striving to prevent further violence and promote peace in the region.
