UK Eurovision Song Contest Winner Passes Away Amid Tributes

UK Eurovision Song Contest winner and singer-songwriter, Martin Lee, who was a member of the group Brotherhood Of Man, has sadly passed away at the age of 77. The group achieved victory in the Eurovision Song Contest with their song “Save Your Kisses For Me” in The Hague, Netherlands. This triumph was a remarkable success, as they topped the international competition with 164 points, over 70 points ahead of second-placed Switzerland. The hit single not only reached number one on the UK singles chart but also topped charts in over 30 countries.

In an official statement released by the band, they announced the passing of Martin Lee with great sadness, revealing that he passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, September 29, 2024, due to heart failure after a brief illness. Tony Hiller, the group’s manager, attributed the song’s success to their extensive TV appearances in countries like France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland leading up to the contest. Their record went on to sell over six million copies.

Martin Lee joined Brotherhood Of Man as the main vocalist and guitarist in 1972, alongside Lee Sheriden, Sandra Stevens, and Nicky Stevens, handpicked by Hiller after the original lineup disbanded. Prior to his time with the group, Lee had released a solo single titled “Cry Jose” and had also performed with the Johnny Howard Band. Born Martin Barnes on November 26, 1946, in Purley, London, Lee had spent five years of his youth residing in Australia.
