Two streets in Welsh town centre to shut for almost two months causing misery for drivers

Two roads in the centre of a Welsh town are to close for almost two months, causing disruption for drivers. The closure will take place in Llanelli in Carmarthenshire starting from Tuesday, August 27. The affected roads are Cowell Street and Stepney Street, which host various businesses including a Wetherspoons pub and independent shops. The entrance to Llanelli Market is also impacted as it connects Cowell Street to Stepney Street, part of which is pedestrianised.

Carmarthenshire Council has deemed the work as “essential”. Businesses in the area have been informed about the closure, with alternative parking options provided at Murray Street Car Park and other nearby streets during the roadworks. While Cowell Street and the western end of Stepney Street will be closed to traffic, pedestrian access to businesses on both roads will still be available. The roadworks are anticipated to span throughout September and most of October, with both streets inaccessible to vehicles for seven weeks.

Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, culture, leisure, and tourism, expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the necessary works. The council aims to carry out the essential work in line with the Tackling Towns programme. Pedestrians will still be able to access businesses in the area, with the council assuring that the closure is crucial for the town’s development.

Do you think Llanelli should be given city status? The temporary closure of these two central roads presents challenges for both drivers and businesses in the area, with alternative arrangements put in place to minimise disruption.
