The tragic death of a young man following the use of ecstasy has raised questions as an inquest heard disturbing details of the events leading to his passing. Jakub Jarzecki, aged 21, collapsed at a house party after consuming the drug. Originally from Italy, Jakub had been working in Lancashire alongside his brother-in-law Mateusz at a company called Wellocks. The fateful night of May 1 began innocently as Jakub and his colleagues decided to have drinks after learning about a fellow worker’s suspension. They gathered at a female colleague’s residence on Castle Street after their shift.
Mateusz left the gathering early but later received a frantic call about Jakub’s deteriorating condition at around 8 am. When Mateusz arrived at the house, he was shocked by Jakub’s state and urgently demanded that an ambulance be called, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Paramedics arrived at 9.32 am and found Jakub with alarming vital signs, including a high heart rate, elevated temperature, and breathing rates. Despite their efforts, Jakub suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and later passed away in the emergency department.
During the inquest held on September 24 at Preston Coroner’s Court, friends and colleagues described Jakub’s behaviour before his collapse. Witness Katarzyna shared that Jakub was speaking in a strange language and exhibiting unusual behaviour at the house party. Detectives discovered empty snap-seal bags at the property, hinting at possible drug use, although no concrete evidence was found. Mateusz expressed concerns over the delay in calling for medical help and questioned why an ambulance wasn’t summoned sooner.
Toxicology reports confirmed that Jakub had fatal levels of MDMA in his system. Assistant Coroner Sian Jones concluded that Jakub’s death was a result of drug use, emphasizing the reluctance to seek medical assistance during the critical moments. Jakub’s family, devastated by the loss, struggled to come to terms with the tragic event and the circumstances surrounding it. A GoFundMe page was set up by a colleague to help with funeral expenses, highlighting the community’s support during this difficult time.
