Motorists across the UK are being advised to be vigilant as the top 10 most stolen cars in the country have been listed, raising concerns about vehicle security. The data, compiled by Tempcover, a temporary car insurance service, and analysed using DVLA data, sheds light on the most targeted vehicle models. The Ford Fiesta claimed the top spot as the most stolen car in 2024, with a staggering 4,446 thefts reported. This equates to an average of 12 Fiestas stolen every day. Despite Ford discontinuing the model in July 2023 to focus on electric vehicles, the Fiesta remained a prime target for thieves. While thefts of Fiestas decreased by 25.6% in 2024 compared to the previous year, it was still a cause for concern.

Following closely behind the Ford Fiesta was the Volkswagen Golf, securing the second spot on the list with 1,727 reported thefts in 2024. The Ford Focus and Toyota RAV4 also made it to the top 10, with 1,700 and 1,260 reported thefts respectively. Luxury car brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Range Rover were not immune to theft, with models like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C Class, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Sport making the list. Surprisingly, even popular smaller cars like the Vauxhall Corsa were among the top 10 most stolen cars in the UK, with 870 thefts reported in 2024.

In addition to mainstream models, high-end luxury cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys were also targeted by thieves in 2024. Despite a decrease in thefts of these luxury vehicles compared to the previous year, the numbers remained significant, highlighting the ongoing issue of car theft across all car segments. Claire Wills-Mckissick from Tempcover emphasised the importance of staying informed about ways to protect vehicles against theft. She recommended precautionary measures such as using steering wheel locks, installing immobilisers, and creating well-lit parking spaces with motion-sensor lights to deter potential thieves.

The rise in car thefts, especially of popular models like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf, underscores the need for heightened awareness of vehicle security measures among motorists. With almost 54,000 reported stolen cars in 2024, a 16% decrease from the previous year, there is still work to be done to combat car theft in the UK. Temporary car insurance was also highlighted as an option to provide flexibility and protection in the event of a stolen vehicle. A stolen car not only represents a financial loss but can also disrupt daily life and cause additional stress for the owner.

As car theft continues to be a prevalent issue in the UK, it is essential for car owners to take proactive steps to safeguard their vehicles. Being aware of the most stolen car models can help motorists be more cautious and implement security measures to prevent theft. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, drivers can reduce the risk of their vehicles becoming targets for thieves. Car theft is not only a financial loss but also an emotional and practical inconvenience, so being prepared and proactive is key in protecting one’s valuable asset on the road.
