Resurfacing of Sexton’s Comments on Finn Russell
In other news, Johnny Sexton’s past comments regarding Scottish star Finn Russell have resurfaced following Sexton’s appointment to the British & Irish Lions coaching team. Sexton, set to take on the role of kicking coach for the upcoming tour of Australia, had previously shared his assessment of potential squad members in an interview last year. While Sexton praised England’s Owen Farrell, he labelled Russell as “flashy,” a term he later clarified regarding Marcus Smith. Sexton also candidly expressed his disappointment over being excluded from the 2021 Lions tour in his autobiography, where he questioned Russell’s selection as the media’s favourite.
Johann van Graan, Russell’s club coach, has downplayed the potential for friction between the two players if Russell secures a spot on the Lions squad. Van Graan emphasised mutual respect in rugby and predicted seamless integration if Russell is chosen, pointing to the collaborative spirit evident in teams like the Barbarians. He highlighted the unity and camaraderie that transcend national allegiances in elite rugby circles, foreseeing a harmonious environment within the Lions camp, should Russell be selected.
Ireland’s Erin King Faces Heartbreak Due to Knee Injury
Tragedy struck for Ireland’s Erin King, as a serious knee injury will force her to miss the remainder of the Guinness Women’s Six Nations and the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The 21-year-old back-rower sustained the injury during Ireland’s match against England, ending her season prematurely. King, the World Rugby Women’s XVs Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2024, expressed devastation over the setback but pledged her support to the team from the sidelines. With the Rugby World Cup scheduled for August and September in England, King will focus on her recovery and backing her teammates in their upcoming challenges.
