The 2025 Newport Marathon Festival is gearing up to be the most significant event yet. Set to take place on Sunday, April 13, more than 10,000 runners will participate in various races, including the marathon, half marathon, 10K, and junior races. After a successful revamp last year that introduced the half marathon, this year’s festival promises to be the largest to date.
Participants will tackle one of Europe’s flattest marathon courses, passing through key landmarks like Newport’s International Sports Village, Gwent Levels, Newport Wetlands in Goldcliff, and the iconic Transporter Bridge in the final stretch. All race categories are fully booked, and on-the-day entries are not available, reflecting the high level of interest and anticipation surrounding the event.
The marathon and half marathon races are scheduled to commence at 9 am, followed by the 10K at 9.45 am. The future challengers race will kick off at 12 pm, with the toddler dash and family fun run following later in the afternoon. All races will start from the event village located on Usk Way, opposite the Lidl carpark, adding to the excitement and energy of the day.
To facilitate the smooth running of the event, there will be road closures across Newport city centre throughout the day. Organisers advise both participants and spectators to plan their journeys in advance to avoid any inconveniences. Usk Way will experience the longest closure from 3 am to 7 pm, with significant parts of the city centre closed from 7.30 am to 3 pm.
For those planning their travel, there are various options available. An official event park and ride service will operate from the Office of National Statistics to the Dolman Theatre, providing a convenient five-minute walk to the start line. Public transport, including trains and coaches, can be utilised, although services may be limited due to the event and road closures.
Spectators looking for prime viewing spots can head to the event village on Usk Way, where they can witness the start and finish of the races. Additionally, locations like High Street, Blaina Wharf, and North Row in Redwick offer excellent vantage points to cheer on the runners as they tackle different sections of the courses. Entertainment stations along the race route will further enhance the spectator experience with live music performances.
As Newport gears up for the highly anticipated Marathon Festival, the atmosphere is charged with enthusiasm and excitement. With a record number of participants and a stunning course backdrop, the 2025 event promises to be a memorable celebration of athleticism and community spirit. So, whether you’re a seasoned runner, a supportive spectator, or a curious onlooker, make sure to mark your calendars for a day filled with adrenaline, camaraderie, and inspirational moments at the Newport Marathon 2025.
