A man has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for fracturing his girlfriend’s jaw after assaulting her while heavily intoxicated. Keelan Parsons, 21, attacked the victim by pulling her to the floor and kicking her in the head and mouth. The incident occurred after the couple had been out for a meal in Treorchy and began arguing on a bus on their way back to Porth. The violent assault took place at a Texaco petrol station in Syphon Street, where Parsons physically attacked the victim, leaving her with a fractured jawbone and bruises to her abdomen.
During the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Parsons returned to the victim while she was still on the floor, and crouched over her to deliver multiple punches to her head and stomach. The prosecutor described how the victim tried to call the police and screamed for help, but Parsons took the phone from her and walked away before returning to continue the assault. Despite the severity of the attack, Parsons pleaded guilty to wounding inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
In court, Parsons’ defence lawyer explained that the assault was out of character for the defendant, who had turned to alcohol and drugs following the end of a previous long-standing relationship. The defence highlighted Parsons’ remorse and his lack of previous criminal record. Recorder Christian Jowett sentenced Parsons to 17 months’ imprisonment, with the requirement to serve half the sentence in custody before being released on licence.
The victim, who withdrew her support for the prosecution, suffered significant physical injuries as a result of the assault. The court heard how Parsons’ violent actions had caused her to endure a fractured jawbone and multiple bruises. Despite the victim’s decision not to pursue legal action, Parsons was held accountable for his actions and received a custodial sentence for the harm caused.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The court’s decision to impose a custodial sentence reflects the severity of the assault and sends a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated in society. The victim’s courage in coming forward and the legal system’s response underscore the significance of addressing and preventing instances of violence within relationships.
