Thug Brutally Beats Man Unconscious with Child’s Baseball Bat
In a horrifying incident, a man named Logan Welch, 34, brutally attacked a man named Lee Willmott outside the victim’s home in Newport, Wales. Armed with a child’s baseball bat, Welch mercilessly beat Willmott unconscious. The attack took place on May 5 last year, leaving the victim with significant injuries, including bruises, a fractured rib, and blurred vision in his left eye.
The assault unfolded after both men had been drinking at Bailey’s public house, where an altercation between them was broken up by others. Subsequently, Welch armed himself with a bottle of wine and went to confront Willmott at his home. Despite the victim’s pleas, Welch continued to strike him with the wooden bat, even sitting on top of him to pin him down while delivering vicious blows.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene, stating that Welch seemed intent on causing serious harm to Willmott. The victim, terrified for his life, tried to defend himself to no avail as Welch relentlessly continued the assault. Eventually, Willmott managed to escape into his flat, but not before sustaining severe injuries.
Following his arrest, Welch initially claimed self-defence but later pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. The court learned about Welch’s troubled past, including eight previous convictions for various offences. In a victim personal statement, Willmott revealed the profound impact of the attack on his life, causing anxiety, depression, and a fear of leaving his home.
During the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Hywel James condemned Welch’s actions as fuelled by alcohol and drugs, resulting in a prolonged and brutal attack. Considering Welch a dangerous offender, the judge sentenced him to 54 months in prison with an extended two-year licence period. Additionally, a restraining order was imposed on Welch for seven years.
