Three things you must do to stop winter bug spreading

Winter Bug Prevention Tips to Stay Healthy

As cases of norovirus continue to surge across the UK, a nurse has outlined three crucial steps to prevent the spread of this highly contagious winter bug. Norovirus, more prevalent during the colder months, has shown an early increase in infections this year, with a 29% rise reported between September 23 and October 6, double the usual rate for this period. The symptoms of norovirus can be severe, leaving individuals feeling extremely unwell, with some describing the experience as harrowing.

NHS Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, Christine Woodgate, shared valuable advice in a TikTok video on how to protect oneself and loved ones from norovirus. Woodgate highlights the importance of recognising symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, headache, or muscle aches, which could indicate norovirus infection. Here are the three key measures she recommends to stop the spread of the disease:

1. Stay at Home: If you suspect you have norovirus, Woodgate advises staying home from work or school until you have been symptom-free for two days. Avoid visiting care homes or hospitals during this period to prevent spreading the virus further.

2. Proper Hand Hygiene: Woodgate emphasises the significance of washing hands with soap and water to prevent transmission. Hand sanitiser is not effective against norovirus, so thorough hand washing for at least 40 seconds is essential, especially after using the toilet or before handling food.

3. Seek Medical Advice: If worried about symptoms, Woodgate recommends contacting NHS 111 for guidance. With norovirus being highly contagious but typically resolving within two days with rest and hydration, professional medical treatment is often unnecessary.

It is vital not to visit a GP if infected with norovirus to prevent spreading the virus to others. Seek emergency care only if experiencing severe symptoms like bloody vomit or intense abdominal pain. Norovirus can spread easily through close contact, contaminated surfaces, or ingesting food handled by an infected individual.

A norovirus patient, Isabel Klee, shared her challenging experience on TikTok, expressing relief after enduring a distressing four days of illness. By following these preventative measures and being vigilant about personal hygiene, individuals can help curb the spread of norovirus and protect themselves and their communities this winter.
