‘Drug Driving’ Dad Celebrates Outside Court After Ban

A 29-year-old man was seen laughing and pumping his fist outside Cardiff Magistrates’ Court after being slapped with a 12-month driving ban for operating a vehicle under the influence of cannabis. Kieron Smith, of Hendre Road in Pencoed, proudly reacted to his sentence, shouting “yes boy, drug-driving, 12-month ban,” before walking away amused.

During the court hearing, it was revealed that police had received reports on April 26 about a red Audi being driven erratically in Bridgend. Subsequently, officers found Smith’s vehicle parked at The Triangle in Brackla and conducted a roadside drug test due to the smell of cannabis emanating from him. The test showed 8.8mcg of cannabis per litre of blood, leading to his arrest.

Smith, who previously had a conviction for driving offenses, including failing to stop after an accident, cooperated with the authorities. His solicitor, James Harris, explained that Smith had been using cannabis to cope with mental health issues under the supervision of his GP. Harris highlighted that the driving ban would impact Smith’s job prospects as a paint-sprayer on high-end cars, as well as his ability to visit his child and family members.

After deliberation, the magistrates imposed a 12-month driving ban, along with a fine of £120, prosecution costs of £85, and a victim services surcharge of £48, which would be consolidated with his existing court debts.

The case sheds light on the consequences of drug driving and the importance of road safety. Smith’s celebratory reaction outside the court has sparked discussions about attitudes towards driving offenses and the need for stricter penalties to deter irresponsible driving behaviours.

As the issue of drug driving continues to pose risks on the roads, authorities stress the importance of abiding by traffic laws and ensuring sobriety while operating a vehicle. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with driving under the influence of drugs and the legal repercussions that follow such actions.
