The Welsh train service has been named the third busiest in the UK, according to a report by Wales Online. The service, which runs between Cardiff and Bridgend, is the only non-London commuter service to make the list of the 10 busiest trains in England and Wales.

Passengers on the 2:57pm train from Gloucester to Maesteg experience high levels of congestion, with 62% more passengers than available seats after leaving Cardiff. This service has been ranked third on the list, behind the 7:33am Bedford to Three Bridges train and the 7:46am Chiltern Railways service from Prince’s Risborough to London Marylebone.

Transport for Wales (TfW) has acknowledged the overcrowding issue and plans to implement timetable changes in December to alleviate the strain. The aim is to distribute passenger demand across multiple services, providing a more comfortable journey for commuters.

Official statistics show a decline in afternoon departures from Cardiff in 2023 compared to 2022, mainly due to reduced demand for long-distance services between Paddington and West Wales. Despite similar service frequencies between the two years, passenger numbers have shifted.
