Financial difficulties in the mid-2010s put Plantasia at risk of closure when Swansea Council needed to make significant savings. However, thanks to a public petition with over 1,600 signatures, the council reconsidered and decided to invest £1.1 million to revitalize the zoo. Under new management by Parkwood Leisure, Plantasia underwent renovations and rebranding as Plantasia Tropical Zoo in 2021, offering a more interactive and immersive experience for visitors.
