In Penarth, a surprising Welsh town, there has been an alarming increase in violent crime, according to police statistics. The Conservative councillor for Plymouth ward in Penarth, Cllr Rhys Thomas, expressed concern over the rise in crime and called for action, especially to address the issue of shoplifting in the town.
Data from South Wales Police revealed a notable increase in reports of crime in Penarth over the past year. In August 2023, there were 93 reports of crime in the town, which rose to 110 reports in July 2024. Plymouth ward saw the largest increase in reported crimes, with violent and sexual offences along with anti-social behaviour being the most commonly reported incidents.
Furthermore, statistics show that Penarth has experienced a rise in crime over the past two and a half years. Comparing the period from October to December 2021 to the period from April to June 2024, there was an increase from 220 reports to 259 reports. Cllr Rhys Thomas expressed his distress over the surge in violent crime, emphasising the need for a strong response from law enforcement.
Cllr Thomas also highlighted the persistent issue of shoplifting in Penarth, stressing the negative impact it has on local businesses. He called for increased efforts from the Police and Crime Commissioner to address this problem effectively. South Wales Police reported 11 incidents of violence against the person crimes in Plymouth ward, with no serious injuries recorded.
The incidents included cases of domestic harassment, harassment, attempted theft, domestic-related threats, coercive behaviour, and a public order offence. Cllr Thomas underscored the importance of tackling violent crime and shoplifting in Penarth to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.Residents and local authorities are looking to law enforcement agencies to address the rise in crime and ensure the town’s security.
