The Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs Visitor Centre in Cardiff has been recognised as a national award-winning project, named the land management & sustainable development project of the year at the RICS Awards Grand Final. The redeveloped site, which includes a visitor centre and community woodland projects, has been transformed into a health and well-being hub in collaboration with Welsh Water since its acquisition in 2016. The Victorian landmark, built in the late 19th century, originally faced the threat of housing development but has now become a popular community leisure attraction.
The projects at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs have provided high-quality facilities, green and blue spaces, and improved accessibility while preserving the ecology and enhancing biodiversity on the site. Judges praised the project for its innovative land management and construction practices that have positively impacted the local community. The award ceremony, hosted by designer Oliver Heath, took place at The Park Plaza Riverbank in London, showcasing the UK’s most inspirational built projects that contribute significantly to the communities they serve.
Category winners from regional RICS Awards across the UK competed in the Grand Final, vying for top honours in their respective categories. The event also recognised special category awards for infrastructure, environmental impact, outstanding contribution to surveying, and team awards, alongside the Ambassador of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award winners. Colin Harrop, RICS UK Awards National Chair, commended the dedication of professionals in delivering projects that benefit individuals and local economies, highlighting the important role of the surveying profession amidst industry challenges.
The Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs Visitor Centre’s success in winning the national award underscores its significant positive impact and contribution to sustainable development. The transformation of this historic site into a modern hub for well-being and leisure reflects a collaborative effort involving community groups, businesses, and government entities, showcasing the power of innovative and sustainable land management practices in creating lasting community benefits.
