The stories behind some of Wales’ poppy sellers

Welsh Poppy Sellers Share Heartwarming Stories of Dedication to Remembrance Cause

Every November, thousands of Welsh poppy sellers take to the streets to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. These dedicated volunteers sacrifice their time to collect donations and sell poppies, symbolising support for the Armed Forces communities. Since 1921, poppy sellers have played a crucial role in the RBL’s Poppy Appeal, commemorating the sacrifices made during times of conflict. This year, over 2,000 volunteers are participating in Wales’ Poppy Appeal, following last year’s successful fundraiser that exceeded £2 million, providing assistance to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.

Three remarkable women from Wales stand out for their unwavering commitment to the Poppy Appeal. Andrea Ellis, based in Wrexham, has been involved in the appeal for 15 years, inspired by her father Jimmy’s involvement, who served in the Royal Artillery. Despite Jimmy’s passing a few years ago, Andrea continues the family tradition with her sister and her young nephews by her side. She finds fulfillment in connecting with people from all walks of life, rallying the community to support the cause. Andrea’s dedication has seen her volunteer team in Wrexham significantly increase their fundraising goal, surpassing £14,000 last year.

Anne-Marie Cobley, from Newport, represents the third generation of her family devoted to the Poppy Appeal. Her involvement traces back to her grandfather’s support in the 1950s. Through the commitment of her family members, including her children and grandchildren, the Cobley-Husselbee family has fostered a legacy of service towards the appeal. Anne-Marie’s proactive role in organising the Poppy Appeal in Newport has dramatically boosted fundraising efforts, evident in the substantial increase from £6,000 to over £24,000 during her tenure. The familial ties and values instilled in Anne-Marie accentuate her passion for commemorating the sacrifices of those who served.

Ellen Anderson, hailing from Cardiff, brings a unique perspective to the Poppy Appeal, having relocated from Belfast after her husband’s service with the Royal Air Force Regiment. Witnessing firsthand the RBL’s impactful support for an injured friend, Ellen was inspired to volunteer in 2019 and subsequently became the Poppy Appeal organiser for Cardiff city centre. Last year, Ellen’s district raised an impressive sum of over £46,000, a testament to her leadership and the community’s steadfast backing. Her involvement extends beyond fundraising, as Ellen and her daughter participate in Remembrance Sunday events, honouring her husband’s memory with his regimental association.

These inspiring women exemplify the spirit of remembrance and community support that underpins the Poppy Appeal. Their dedication to preserving the memory of those who served and sacrificed for their country serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in Wales.
