Speeding Concerns Lead to New Speed Limits on Welsh Road
Motorists driving at staggering speeds of up to 127mph on a major road in Wales have prompted urgent safety measures to be implemented. The A4059 road in the Cynon Valley, running between Abercynon roundabout and Cwmbach, will soon see new speed limits enforced following a recent traffic review. The decision to introduce these measures comes after a spike in severe traffic collisions, with speed identified as a significant contributing factor.
An analysis conducted by officers revealed alarming statistics, including instances of vehicles exceeding 100mph, with one even reaching a shocking 127mph. While the average speed recorded was 48mph, below the posted speed limit, the high number of speeding violations necessitated immediate action. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council aims to enhance road safety without significantly impacting journey times by introducing reduced speed limits on this dangerous stretch of road.
The proposed changes will involve a general 10mph reduction in speed limits. The A4059 section from Abercynon to Mountain Ash will be designated as a 50mph zone, with a shorter 40mph segment near the Quarter Mile junction. Similarly, the Mountain Ash Comprehensive to Cwmbach route will become a 50mph area, with the existing speed limits through Mountain Ash remaining unchanged. Clear signage will be installed to indicate the revised speed limits to drivers.
To enforce the new speed restrictions effectively, an average speed camera system will be installed along the route. These cameras will monitor vehicle speeds in two sections: from Abercynon roundabout to Mountain Ash near the Cross Valley Link junction, and from Mountain Ash Comprehensive School to Cwmbach close to the petrol station. The primary goal of this technology is to deter motorists from significantly exceeding the speed limit and will be implemented in the near future.
A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council emphasised the importance of these measures in enhancing road safety for all users. The introduction of average speed cameras, along with the revised speed limits, aims to target the minority of drivers who choose to travel at dangerously high speeds. The majority of motorists are expected to comply with the new restrictions, with minimal impact on their travel times. The council appreciates the cooperation of road users as these crucial safety measures are rolled out.
The key message reiterated to residents is to adhere to the new speed limits and respect the safety of all road users. These changes are a proactive step towards reducing accidents and saving lives on this vital route for the community. With the support of South Wales Police and GoSafe, the council is committed to promoting responsible driving habits and ensuring the well-being of those who rely on the A4059 regularly.
In a bid to alleviate the concerns raised by excessive speeding, the upcoming implementation of new speed limits and average speed cameras signals a significant step towards creating a safer road environment for all. The proactive approach taken by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council underscores their commitment to prioritising road safety and addressing the challenges posed by reckless driving behaviours.
