RCT Proposes Schemes for Regional Transport Plan
Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) has put forward a range of transport schemes to be considered as part of the South Wales Regional Transport Plan. The proposal, approved by RCT’s cabinet on January 22, includes various projects aimed at enhancing walking and cycling routes, upgrading bus stations, and implementing new roads and railway connections within the region. These schemes are set to be included in the public consultation phase of the RTP scheduled to commence in late January or early February.
In terms of active travel initiatives, the submitted schemes feature community cycle routes in areas such as Rhondda Fawr, Cynon Valley, Talbot Green to Llanharan to Pencoed, and Pontypridd. Additionally, plans for new cycling routes connecting Ferndale Community School and Cambrian Industrial Estate have been presented. The bus-related proposals encompass enhancements along several corridors, including Creigiau to Pontyclun, Pontypridd to Bridgend, and Aberdare to Abergavenny. Moreover, upgrades for bus stations in Aberdare, Tonypandy, Pontypridd, and Talbot Green are outlined.
Furthermore, designated interchange expansions are part of the scheme, including locations at Porth, Pontyclun, Llanharan, and Treorchy. Private car schemes are also outlined in the proposal, such as the Llanharan Sustainable Transport Corridor, Cynon Gateway, and strategic transport corridor management on various key routes. The Upper Rhondda Relief Road is among the highlighted road projects proposed by the council.
The rail sector features prominently in RCT’s submission, with plans for reinstating passenger services between Aberdare and Hirwaun, along with the establishment of new rail stations at Llwydcoed, Hirwaun, and potentially Hirwaun Industrial Estate. Other proposals include a new rail station at Treforest Industrial Estate and a strategic rail spur to Beddau. The council’s collaboration with Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) and Transport for Wales (TfW) has informed the development of these plans.
While the responsibility for drafting the regional transport plan lies with the Corporate Joint Committees (CJCs), the actual implementation falls on local authorities. RCT is thus tasked with compiling a comprehensive list of transport schemes to be submitted for funding consideration. The prioritisation of schemes is contingent on their feasibility and timely delivery within the designated five-year plan period. Collaborative efforts with CCR and TfW have guided the formulation of these proposals, with a definitive list set to be finalised by January 2025.
The forthcoming public consultation phase will offer stakeholders and residents the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed schemes and shape the future of transport infrastructure in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on the progression of the South Wales Regional Transport Plan and the inclusion of RCT’s initiatives in the overall strategy.
This comprehensive and forward-thinking approach aims to address the evolving transportation needs of the community while promoting sustainable and efficient travel options. The integration of various modes of transport, including cycling, bus, car, and rail, underscores the commitment to enhancing connectivity and accessibility across Rhondda Cynon Taf. As these proposals move towards implementation, the focus remains on realising a cohesive and well-integrated regional transport network that serves the needs of residents and businesses alike.
