Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) has been earmarked to benefit from a substantial allocation of £19.6 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for the upcoming year. This amount, while significant, represents a reduction of £6.8 million compared to the current year’s allocation. The funding is intended for various projects within RCT aimed at fostering economic development and community well-being.
A major focus of the funding is on enhancing town centres, with initiatives geared towards improving accessibility for disabled individuals and revitalising high streets. A budget of £10 million has been proposed for a range of projects, from small-scale grants for town centre enhancements to strategic property developments. Additionally, support is allocated for community infrastructure projects, including renewable energy generation and waste management, with investments in energy efficiency measures and solar panel installations.
Efforts to promote safety and security in communities are also prioritised, with a budget of £873,000 designated for measures aimed at crime prevention. This includes the maintenance of community wardens and safety officers to ensure a secure environment for residents. Moreover, funding is allocated for initiatives that encourage active travel and sustainable transport options, including subsidised public transport to reduce car dependency.
In line with promoting community engagement, funding is provided for volunteering and social action projects, amounting to £369,000. These initiatives aim to enhance social and human capital within local neighbourhoods, fostering a sense of togetherness and resilience. Moreover, support is extended to arts, cultural, heritage, and creative activities, with a budget of £150,000 allocated to enrich the local cultural landscape and attract visitors.
The funding package also includes measures to address the cost of living, particularly through energy efficiency improvements to combat fuel poverty and address climate change. This encompasses the continuation of the community grant programme, which offers financial assistance amounting to £2 million to community groups and organisations across RCT. Furthermore, support for local businesses forms a crucial component, with investments in entrepreneurial networks and grants for business development, amounting to £364,000.
In the realm of skills development and employment, the funding package encompasses initiatives to support economically inactive individuals, providing tailored support and training opportunities. This includes apprenticeships, mentorship programmes, and referrals to specialised training services, with an allocated budget of approximately £3.5 million. By investing in people and skills, RCT aims to empower individuals and enhance workforce participation within the community.
Overall, the proposed allocation is structured around prioritising investment in communities and local infrastructure, supporting businesses, upskilling the workforce, and enhancing overall quality of life within RCT. While the reduction in funding compared to the previous year presents a challenge, the council views the allocation as an opportunity to build upon the progress achieved thus far through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
