The one word First Minister Eluned Morgan used to describe Mark Drakeford’s return to top level politics

Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan has officially announced the composition of her new cabinet, which includes former First Minister Mark Drakeford in a permanent role. Initially, Mr. Drakeford was appointed on a temporary basis to cover health until the cabinet was finalised. However, he has now been given the finance portfolio, a brief he previously held, while Jeremy Miles takes on the health responsibilities.

Mrs. Morgan defended her choices, citing Mr. Miles’ experience and readiness to tackle the challenges of the health brief. She also praised Mr. Drakeford’s extensive experience and the stability he brings to the government, especially during challenging financial times. This reshuffle saw two of the ministers who resigned from the previous cabinet being reinstated in new roles under Mrs. Morgan’s leadership.

In an interview with BBC Wales, Mrs. Morgan highlighted the importance of a balanced team comprising seasoned professionals and new talent. She emphasised the need for delivery and efficiency, especially with only 18 months until the next election. The First Minister’s strategy appears to focus on meeting public priorities and instigating effective governance to benefit the people of Wales.

Regarding the unity within the Labour Senedd group, Mrs. Morgan expressed confidence in fostering a harmonious working atmosphere. She also mentioned the opportunity to collaborate with the new Labour government in Westminster, signalling a fresh start and a renewed sense of purpose.

Criticism has been directed at the delay in announcing the government’s agenda, with Plaid Cymru questioning the priorities amidst ongoing challenges in healthcare and the economy. However, Mrs. Morgan remains steadfast in her commitment to delivering results and bringing about positive change for Wales.

As Wales’ first female leader, Mrs. Morgan stressed the significance of providing a new beginning and establishing a government focused on results. Acknowledging the demanding nature of the health brief, she assured support for Mr. Miles and underscored the government’s collective responsibility in addressing vital public issues.

With a blend of experienced leaders and fresh perspectives, Mrs. Morgan aims to lead a government dedicated to effective governance and tangible outcomes. The appointment of Mr. Drakeford in a key role reflects her strategy of assembling the best team to tackle the challenges ahead, amidst growing anticipation for the government’s plan for the future.
