A quick and simple test known as the ‘flamingo test’ has emerged as a potential predictor of future health. This test involves standing on one leg for a minute and can reveal insights into your overall health and potential risk of developing health issues in the coming years. The National Health Service (NHS) has recommended that individuals, irrespective of age, should be able to hold this pose for a certain duration to maintain good health.
For instance, individuals between 18-39 years old are expected to stand on one leg continuously for around 43 seconds, while those in the 40-49 age group should aim for 40 seconds. As age increases, the average duration of maintaining balance decreases, with people in their 50s needing 37 seconds, those in their 60s requiring 30 seconds, and so forth. This test serves as a valuable indicator of strength, balance, and agility, crucial elements for maintaining a healthy lifestyle as we age.
Health experts are encouraging individuals to take up the ‘flamingo challenge’ to assess their balance and potentially detect any underlying health risks. Selina Lim, Divisional Director for Integrated Pathways at ESNEFT, highlighted the importance of balance in predicting future health issues. Participants in the challenge can quickly identify if they may be at risk and explore various activities to enhance their overall fitness and reduce health risks.
Debbie Dyer, Clinical Lead for Ageing Well and Anticipatory Care at the North East Essex Alliance, emphasised the benefits of an active lifestyle in promoting good health and independence as individuals grow older. Engaging in regular physical activity not only enhances physical fitness but also contributes to mental well-being and social interaction. Dyer further stressed the advantages of staying active, particularly during the summer months, to improve mental health, fitness, and overall well-being.
A connection has been established by researchers between the ability to balance on one leg for at least 10 seconds in middle or later life and a heightened risk of mortality over the subsequent decade. The ability to maintain balance is seen as a fundamental health indicator that may deteriorate as individuals age. Prior to attempting the one-leg stand, it is advised to take safety precautions, such as having someone present, ensuring adequate space, and wearing appropriate footwear.
The ‘flamingo test’ offers a simple yet effective way to assess one’s balance and potentially uncover hidden health risks. By incorporating activities that strengthen balance and mobility, individuals can work towards maintaining good health and reducing the risk of future health complications. Taking proactive steps to enhance physical fitness and balance can significantly contribute to a healthier and more independent lifestyle in the long run.
