A new housing estate comprising 214 homes has been completed in the east of Cardiff on the site of the former Eastern High School. The housing development named Aspen Grove in Rumney is part of Cardiff Council’s Cardiff Living programme. After receiving planning permission in January 2019, the construction process has finally come to an end, with images of the finished estate now available.
Cardiff Council has worked alongside its partners, Wates, to create modern, spacious homes equipped with advanced features aimed at helping residents achieve energy savings. The mix of properties includes two, three, four, and five-bedroom homes, with 65 designated as council homes and 149 for private sale. Ground source heat pumps, PV panels, battery storage, electric vehicle charging points, and intelligent energy systems have been incorporated into both council and private properties.
The completion of Aspen Grove is a significant step towards addressing Cardiff’s housing crisis, with approximately 8,000 individuals currently on the council’s housing waiting list. In response to the rising demand for shelter, the council has explored various options including acquiring hotels and student accommodations. Plans for additional housing developments are already in progress, with a focus on creating over 4,000 new homes in the city over the next few years.
Despite the ongoing efforts to alleviate the housing shortage, challenges remain, as highlighted by Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cardiff Council’s cabinet member for housing and communities. Families are experiencing prolonged stays in emergency accommodation before transitioning to temporary housing, indicating the pressing need for more affordable and sustainable housing solutions. The completion of Aspen Grove signifies a step forward in the council’s commitment to providing quality homes for its residents.
The housing estate in Rumney serves as a testament to Cardiff Council’s dedication to tackling the housing crisis and providing suitable accommodation for its residents. By partnering with construction companies and implementing innovative technologies, the council aims to create a sustainable living environment that meets the needs of the community. The completion of Aspen Grove marks a milestone in the ongoing effort to address housing challenges and enhance the quality of life for Cardiff residents.
