Two Cardiff mums, Laura Crandon and Elise Emmerson, are embarking on an incredible challenge that will take them thousands of miles away from home. The duo, who have braved marathons and Ironman competitions in the past, are now preparing for a mammoth charity swim in San Francisco. This daring feat will see them swim two miles from Alcatraz Island to St Francis Yacht Club, battling freezing waters, strong currents, and possibly encountering sea lions along the way.
This charity swim, scheduled for May 19, attracts thousands of participants each year and is considered one of the biggest events of its kind in the world. Laura and Elise, residents of Whitchurch in Cardiff, have been friends for over a decade, connected through their children. They have conquered various fitness challenges together, ranging from 5km runs to completing the grueling Ironman Wales competition in 2022. Now, they are part of a 25-person team led by Velindre Charity ambassador Dave Tonge and Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams for Velindre Cancer Centre’s first overseas swim.
The decision to take on this challenge was deeply personal for Laura and Elise. Laura shared that her motivation stems from her father’s passing due to prostate cancer and her mother’s ongoing cancer treatment. She commended Velindre Cancer Centre for the vital care and support they provide to cancer patients and their families in Wales. Elise, a clinical advisor for Macmillan Cancer Support and part-time community primary care lead for Velindre Cancer Centre, emphasized the importance of raising funds for cancer research to ensure the best possible care for everyone.
Despite their experience in endurance events, Laura and Elise admitted to feeling ‘initially terrified’ at the prospect of the San Francisco swim. They have been diligently training, braving cold water swims in Pontylido and open water sessions in Barry. Elise even installed an ice water tub in preparation for the frigid temperatures they will face during the challenge. The unpredictable nature of swimming in the open sea, far from the familiar shores of Tenby, adds an element of apprehension for the duo.
To raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre, Laura and Elise have set a target of £6,000 and plan to run one mile every hour for 24 hours around Whitchurch. They aim to finish before the Wales v Ireland Six Nations rugby match on February 22, donning swimming hats and Velindre t-shirts to raise awareness. The courageous mums are determined to overcome their fears and obstacles, with a shared commitment to supporting a cause they deeply believe in.
As they prepare for this extraordinary challenge, Laura and Elise are grateful for the support they have received from their community. Their dedication to raising funds and awareness for cancer care exemplifies the power of friendship and shared commitment to making a positive impact in the fight against cancer.
