A couple from Denbighshire, Andrew and Louisa Godfrey, have taken on a remarkable task of restoring a derelict country estate. The Godfreys purchased the crumbling Pool Park Estate in Ruthin in January, with plans to transform it into a Welsh retreat. The estate, set on approximately 26 acres of land, is a Grade II listed property.
Andrew Godfrey, a local resident, shared his journey of acquiring and working on the estate. Despite his limited knowledge of the site before purchasing it, Andrew, a former joiner turned successful businessman, saw an opportunity to bring new life to the historic property. His wife, Louisa, who recently joined his business, also fell in love with the estate.
The couple’s vision for the property includes renovating existing outbuildings into holiday cottages, tree houses, and holiday pods. They intend to use the earnings from these ventures to fund the restoration of the main manor house, which they envision as a 20-bedroom venue for various events.
The estate, with its rich history dating back to the 16th century, features notable elements such as a 17th-century sundial, a Victorian tennis court, and a walled kitchen garden. Andrew expressed admiration for the craftsmanship evident in the estate, particularly in the oak details found in the stables.
As work progresses on the estate, Andrew highlighted the unexpected friendships and overwhelming community support they have received. A direct descendant of the estate’s builder, Lord Bagot, has been instrumental in providing insights into the property’s architectural history. Andrew emphasised the importance of preserving the estate’s heritage while creating a sustainable business model.
