The family selling the best sushi you’ve had after fleeing the war in Ukraine

A family who fled Ukraine amidst war has found solace in sharing their love for sushi in Llandudno. Edvard and Uliana Ivanian, along with their disabled daughter, Daniella, left their home country in February 2022, two weeks after the war broke out. Originally from Kyiv, the family traversed through Poland, Germany, and France before settling in the UK, seeking better healthcare for Daniella, who has Joubert Syndrome.

Upon arriving in Wales in May 2022, Edvard and Uliana were struck by the kindness of the people and the beautiful surroundings. Despite missing their homeland, they’ve adapted to life in Wales, with Daniella attending school and receiving the medical attention she needs. Their journey to Llandudno brought about a new chapter as they ventured into the culinary world, opening Wasabi takeaway, offering sushi favourites like California rolls and futomaki.

Edvard’s background in banking took a backseat as they delved into their passion for cooking, honing their skills with help from a friend who was a sushi chef. The couple’s dedication to serving high-quality sushi has garnered praise from locals, who appreciate the authentic flavours of their dishes. While dreaming of returning to Kyiv someday, the Ivanian family has embraced their life in Wales, finding joy in sharing their story and culture through their food.

Despite the challenges of starting a new business and adjusting to a different lifestyle, Edvard and Uliana have found fulfillment in connecting with their customers and introducing them to the joys of sushi. Their perseverance and resilience shine through as they navigate a new chapter in their lives, embodying the spirit of hope and determination in the face of adversity.
