Welsh Company Prepares to Launch Satellite into Space
Cardiff-based company Space Forge is gearing up to send the first-ever Welsh satellite into space. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as their initial satellite launch was unsuccessful due to the failure of the Virgin Orbit mission in 2023. However, Space Forge is now putting the final touches on its second satellite, the ForgeStar®-1, which is set to be launched later this year. The satellite will orbit the planet and produce complex materials for the semiconductor industry that are either challenging or impossible to manufacture on Earth.
Having raised £7.2 million in what is considered Europe’s largest seed round for a space tech company, Space Forge is determined to push boundaries further. The company plans to establish a groundbreaking Microgravity Research Centre in south Wales, a first of its kind. Joshua Western, CEO and co-founder of Space Forge, expressed gratitude towards the Welsh Government for their support. He highlighted the instrumental role of the government in providing R&D funding and scaling up the company’s ambitions. The establishment of the National Microgravity Research Centre will mark a significant step towards in-space manufacturing as a new economic frontier.
Space Forge’s technology is not only innovative but also environmentally friendly. The company states that its technology has the potential to reduce energy consumption and cut CO2 emissions in high-value manufacturing processes by up to 75%. The Welsh Government has extended its support to Space Forge, facilitating its growth through research and development funding and other essential resources. The government is also assisting Space Forge in securing a larger base in South Wales to further expand its operations.
Rebecca Evans, the cabinet secretary for economy, energy, and planning, emphasized the importance of fostering high-value manufacturing and innovation in Wales. Semiconductor technology plays a pivotal role in driving the economy into the 21st century, and the Welsh Government is keen on supporting industries with promising futures, including the rapidly growing space sector. Evans commended Space Forge as a success story, creating over 60 highly skilled technical roles and supporting additional jobs in the supply chain.
The collaboration between Space Forge and the Welsh Government signifies a promising future for the space industry in Wales. By combining access to space with expertise in advanced materials, the partnership aims to push the boundaries of innovation and technological advancement. The upcoming launch of the ForgeStar®-1 satellite marks a significant milestone in Space Forge’s journey and sets the stage for pioneering developments in in-space manufacturing.
With the support of the Welsh Government and its dedication to nurturing cutting-edge industries, Space Forge is poised to make a lasting impact in the space sector. As the company prepares to send the Welsh satellite into orbit, all eyes are on the innovative developments that will unfold in the realm of in-space manufacturing. The launch of the satellite represents a testament to Wales’ commitment to driving technological innovation and economic growth in the space industry.
