Thousands of daring individuals across Wales embraced the festive spirit by taking a dip in the chilly sea waters during Boxing Day swims. The tradition kicked off in Porthcawl on Christmas morning, where more than 1,000 swimmers participated in the themed event of “The Deep Blue Sea.” From festive outfits to creative costumes like crabs and penguins, participants displayed their enthusiasm for the annual event.
The primary goal of these swims is to raise funds for various charities through sponsorships for swimmers and on-the-day bucket collections. Since its inception in 1965, the swim has contributed over £175,000 to support local charities and organisations. This year, the headline charity was Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, adding a meaningful cause to the festive tradition.
On Boxing Day, the tradition continued at Cefn Sidan Beach in Pembrey, where hundreds of participants, clad in fancy dress or swimwear, engaged in the Walrus dip. Surf schools and locals united for the yearly event, creating a vibrant atmosphere along the coastline. Meanwhile, at the Tenby Boxing Day swim, a staggering 1,150 participants, adorned in superhero-themed costumes to honour the RNLI’s 200th anniversary, set a new attendance record. The occasion was made even more special as a couple chose this moment to get engaged amidst the festivity.
Mayor Dai Morgan of Tenby expressed delight at the strong community turnout, emphasising the significance of the swim for charitable causes. The event not only brought people together but also provided a platform to support meaningful initiatives. The festive spirit was captured in various snapshots from the swims, showcasing the creativity, enthusiasm, and community spirit of the participants.
From families enjoying the tradition together to individuals of all ages braving the chilly waters, the swims offered a blend of joy and camaraderie. The RNLI’s vigilant presence ensured the safety of participants, adding to the festive cheer at these coastal events. As the Boxing Day swims concluded with participants drying off and warming up, the memories created and the funds raised for charity lingered on, highlighting the community’s resilience and spirit of giving. Despite the cold sea temperatures, thousands of individuals across Wales embraced the tradition and made a meaningful contribution to local causes, embodying the true essence of the festive season.
