In Swansea this half-term, people will have the opportunity to meet robot cats and dogs, discover the secrets of how Egyptians mummified their dead, and even learn to appreciate maggots, among other intriguing activities. The Swansea Science Festival organised by Swansea University and the National Waterfront Museum will feature over twenty free events. Helen Griffiths, Swansea University’s Pro VC for Research and Innovation, expressed excitement about the upcoming festival, stating that it has become a significant event for the city since its inception in 2016. She highlighted the festival’s role in bringing together the community, academics, and researchers to celebrate science.
The festival will kick off with a pre-weekend show at the Taliesin Arts Centre by The Magical Mr West with his entertaining performance, Crafty Fools. Following this, the main weekend celebration will take place at the National Waterfront Museum on 26 and 27 October from 10 am to 4 pm. The event will showcase more than 20 free exhibitions featuring cutting-edge research from Swansea University. The festival will culminate on Monday, 28 October, with a thrilling performance by TV presenter Andy Day in his show, Andy’s Dino Rap.
In addition to the free exhibitions, there will be bookable events such as interactive workshops and engaging talks exploring topics like marine mysteries, electricity marvels, and the impactful stories of individuals shaping the world. The festival, which has been a hit since its inception, attracted around 10,000 visitors last year, demonstrating its popularity and appeal to a wide audience.
Attendees can look forward to the diverse range of activities and engaging insights into the world of science. The Swansea Science Festival promises to offer a unique and unforgettable experience for all ages, blending education with entertainment in a fun and interactive setting.
