Bus travel in Swansea will be free on 19 days leading up to Christmas and New Year, as part of an initiative to encourage more people to visit the city centre and use public transport. Starting from November 16, residents will be able to travel for free on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on Monday, December 23, Christmas Eve, and from December 27 until 7 pm on New Year’s Eve. This offer applies to journeys that start and end within the Swansea Council area, including locations like Gorseinon, Pontarddulais, Gower, and Morriston.
The free bus travel initiative, now in its fourth year, aims to support families in Swansea during the festive period. Swansea Council leader, Rob Stewart, expressed pride in offering the largest free travel promotion yet, emphasizing the importance of providing financial relief to residents during the expensive Christmas season. Additionally, the council’s focus on promoting public transport usage aims to reduce car dependency and support local transport operators.
Council members highlighted the significance of encouraging more people to utilise public transport, noting that the free bus offer presents an opportunity for individuals who may not have previously considered taking the bus. By increasing passenger numbers and reducing car usage, Swansea aims to support sustainable transportation practices and ease congestion on the roads. The comprehensive package ‘A Christmas for All’ will encompass free bus travel, food support initiatives, activities, events, and welcoming spaces to assist residents during the winter season.
The schedule of free bus travel days includes weekends leading up to Christmas, with specific dates allocated for free travel on Saturdays, Sundays, and key days like Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Swansea residents are encouraged to take advantage of this offer to explore the city, visit family, and partake in festive activities. Through initiatives like these, Swansea Council aims to foster a community spirit, support local businesses, and promote environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
